War in the Marianas
Saipan/Tinian This photograph is taken at Banzai Cliff. This place was the last line of defense of Japanese troops during World War II. It is hard to imagine that many of the japanese troops commit suicide in this place after Japanese emperor announced their defeats to avoid being captured by the Americans. Tens of tombstones were placed by the Japanese soldiers' relatives after the war ended. These pictures were taken in the same place near Banzai Cliff. As I mentioned above, this place was the last defense line of Japanese troops. You can see the actual cannon they used during the war and a massive bunker that was covered with a bunch of holes. The bunker was used by Japanese soldiers which was perfectly camouflaged with the cliffs around. Since it was also at higher grounds, many of the American soldiers have died by this bunker.
