War in the Marianas

 Saipan/Tinian

This photograph is taken at Banzai Cliff. This place was the last line of defense of Japanese troops during World War II. It is hard to imagine that many of the japanese troops commit suicide in this place after Japanese emperor announced their defeats to avoid being captured by the Americans. Tens of tombstones were placed by the Japanese soldiers' relatives after the war ended.

These pictures were taken in the same place near Banzai Cliff. As I mentioned  above, this place was the last defense line of Japanese troops. You can see the actual cannon they used during the war and a massive bunker that was covered with a bunch of holes. The bunker was used by Japanese soldiers which was perfectly camouflaged with the cliffs around. Since it was also at higher grounds, many of the American soldiers have died by this bunker. The cannon is used against tanks, but mostly against American’s battleship. With its size, the impact of the cannon was so strong that it could actually shut down America's battleship. The left picture is a monument for the Korean soldiers who were forced to fight for Japanese troops.

This big glass case is the place where they stored nuclear bombs before they sent it to Japan. After America planned to drop a nuclear bomb, they first decided to move it to Tinian and then combine from there. Since its power was too strong, they decided the safest way to bring it to Japan. By these two massive bombs, Japan surrendered and it prevented more victims from the war. Despite its great result, still today the action of sending a nuclear bomb is on the table of morals.
